What Can Brown Do For You?

June 8, 2008

It was a lock.

The main opponent was out of the race, hurt.

All Big Brown had to do was show up.

And then a funny thing happened on the way to the Triple Crown.

The ‘ordained’ winner finished last.

So now Big Brown is the biggest disappointment in sports since…last year’s New York Mets.

They had a lock.

Just show up.

No team had ever blown a seven game lead with seventeen games to play. It couldn’t happen.

Then on the last day of the season the Phillies passed the Mets to win the National League East Championship.

What happened?

And this after the Met’s advertising promised ‘your year has come!”

There’s a pattern here.

Famous words like, “it ain’t over til its over”, and that stuff about the fat lady are true.

Radio stations are excited about the beginning of each rating period only to ‘coast’ during the last few weeks.

This is a reminder to all program directors.

The Spring Survey ends June 25. Keep your ‘eye on the prize’ and ‘petal to the metal’.

Remember diaries are still in the field a week after the ratings period officially ends.

If Big Brown did anything, it was reminding us to stay in the race until the end.
